THE WORK
This work grew out of a lifetime of collecting and arranging pictures, and at its heart it is simple exploration. It is about happenstance, the flaw, the crack where the light comes through, the weathered wood beneath the peeling paint. It is made from both found images and my own through exploration and intuition. It is about the seen, the unseen, and the imagined.
I am inspired by both high and low art, myth and music, cinema, religion, literature, and pornography. The sacred and the profane. The process is intuitive and based on variation and repetition. It is not unlike making music. I am influenced by Pollock, Schiele, Hopper, Richter, Duchamp, Richard Kern, Anne Hamilton, Modigliani, Francesca Woodman, and Belladonna.
I have no clear idea what the viewer sees. I see the component parts. The viewer sees the whole. To me, each image is a puzzle, a mystery. A visceral intimate game that I invite the viewer to play for awhile. The end result is unique to every person.
